1. Commitment to Student Privacy
At EyesOnTheBus, we build software designed to keep students safe. We believe that protecting student and family privacy is fundamental to this goal. Our system employs strict data minimization strategies, end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for sensitive roster data, and is built to align with national student safety and privacy regulations.
2. Compliance with Regulations
We are dedicated to compliance with the following standards:
- FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act): We act as a "school official" with a legitimate educational interest. Student data remains under the direct control of the respective school or school district. We do not sell, rent, or lease any school records or student data.
- COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act): EyesOnTheBus is intended for use by school administrators, bus drivers, and parents. Children under 13 are not allowed to register accounts or directly interact with the platform. No personal data is knowingly collected from students under 13 directly.
3. Information We Collect
We collect only the minimum required information to provide real-time bus tracking and safety services:
- School Profile: School name, address, and district configuration.
- Student Records: Student Name (first name and last initial only for data minimization) and their assigned bus stop.
- Parent Accounts: Name, email address, password hash, and device push notification token (to send proximity alerts).
- Driver Accounts: Name, assigned route, and live GPS telemetry.
- Live Telemetry: High-frequency GPS coordinates collected from the driver's phone (or dedicated tracker) strictly while on active duty. Background GPS tracking is only active when a driver has explicitly started a route and is automatically disabled once the trip is completed or cancelled.
4. How We Use Information
The collected data is used exclusively to:
- Display the live position of school buses to authorized parents and administrators.
- Calculate accurate, road-aware ETAs for parents waiting at bus stops.
- Send instant push notifications and SMS/voice notifications to administrators and emergency contacts during an SOS event.
- Allow school administrators to manage routes, reassign substitute buses, and schedule exceptions.
5. Security & Data Protection
We implement robust industry-standard safeguards to secure your data:
- End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): Student names and rosters are encrypted in transit and at rest. Security keys are restricted to authorized school administrators and the associated parent accounts.
- Multi-Tenant Isolation: Data from different schools and school districts is strictly isolated at the database level to prevent cross-tenant access.
- Data Retention: We store telemetry and tracking logs only as long as necessary for administrative review and ETA calibration. Schools may request complete deletion of their rosters at any time through the admin portal.
